Ladybugs as Garden Helpers!
Ladybugs are wonderful garden helpers. They eat a variety of things that make them useful as a source for organic pest control. Ladybugs particularly like aphids and may eat upwards of 5,000 in its lifetime. They also eat small insects such as whitefly, mealybugs, scales, mites, bollworm, broccoli worm, tomato hornworm and cabbage moth. Some ladybugs even eat pollen and mildew. When a ladybug flies, when it's not eating, it beats its wings about 5100 times a minute or about 85 beats a second!

Do Spots Tell a Ladybug's Age?
Ladybugs generally live about a year. So the old-wives tale that you can tell a ladybug's age by its spots is simply not true. A lady bug never reveals her age! Nor can you tell a ladybug's sex by its spots. Ladybugs are warning predators with their spot patterns that they taste bad. They are poisonous to small predators that might consider them tasty as a snack. A ladybug can lay up to 2000 ladybug eggs in a lifetime.

The Official State Insect
Ladybugs are the official state insect of Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Tennessee. I didn't even know that states had official insects! But it is good to know that state legislators are not afraid to tackle the tough issues.

The Most Important Fact About Ladybugs!
